arthereİstanbul’dan Telefon Var! ilk numarayı çeviriyorarthereİstanbul’da İstanbul Bienali için kurulan Ayakizi Kitaplığı ilk buluşmaya hazır. Bu kitaplık Homeros’un İlyada’sından bugüne savaşın kıyısından hikâyeler anlatan yaklaşık 600 Türkçe ve Arapça kitaptan oluşuyor. Suriyeli sanatçılar tarafından kurulan arthereİstanbul, 17 Eylül-20 Kasım arasındaki 17. İstanbul Bienali süresince bazen sesli bazen sazlı bir dizi buluşmanın mekânı olacak. Her buluşmada kütüphaneden seçilen kitaplardan parçalar okunacak. arthereİstanbul’dan Telefon Var!, yolu bu mekândan geçmiş, bu mekâna iz bırakmış sanatçılara halihazırda dünyanın neresinde iseler oradan kulak vermeyi, hallerini hatırlarını sormayı planlıyor. İlk buluşmanın konuğu arthereİstanbul’un demirbaş kitaplarından Kalabalık. Dalgalar Üzerinde Karanlık Geceler’in (Jamhara/Assemblage. Dark Nights onto Rolling Waves) yazarı Odai Al Zoubi. Çizer ve heykeltıraş Mohamad Omran ile edebiyatçı Al Zoubi’nin bu ortak çalışması 1980’den bu yana silah sesi ve çatışmanın eksik olmadığı Suriye’nin tarihinden dokuz ânı metinler ve çizimlerle anlatıyor. Bir cenaze, öğretmenlerden işitilen azar, salıverilen mahkûmları taşıyan bir otobüs, sarı bir tarak, derin bir sessizlik hikâyeyi dinleyenleri hiç bitmeyecekmiş gibi görünen bir savaşla burun buruna getiriyor. Ayakizi Nedir?Ayakizi bir öğrenme süreci, savaşların kıyısından hikâye toplama girişimi. Bu hikâyelerin acilen anlatılması gerekse de üzerlerine söz söylemek için kat edilmesi gereken yol zor ve belirsizliklerle dolu. Bazen birkaç kelime, kısa bir anekdot, bir hatıra ya da bir rüya savaşla yaşamaya dair daha sarih bir fikir verebiliyor. Bir kadının Suriye’deki savaştan kaçarken başına geleni anlattığı hikâyede olduğu gibi: “Suriye iklimi komşu Türkiye’nin iklimiyle aynıdır. Ama ben ertesi sabah kaçmaya karar verdiğimiz gece çantaları hazırlarken mevsimin kış olmasına rağmen yanımıza sadece yazlık kıyafetler almıştım.” Ya da yazar Herta Müller’in annesinin 1945’te Romanya’daki köyünde başına gelenler gibi: “Bir sürü insan saklanmıştı. Annem yerin altında dört gün geçirdi. Sonra kar yağdı. Artık ona gizli gizli yemek getiremiyorlardı; ev, ağıl ve zemindeki delik arasındaki her bir adım görünür olmuştu. Köyün tamamında bütün saklanma yerleri karda ayan beyan görünüyordu. Bahçedeki adımlar belliydi. Kar insanları ele vermişti. Sadece annem değil, pek çok insan saklandıkları yerleri kendi istekleriyle terk etmek zorunda kaldı, karın zoruyla bulundukları yerden çıkarıldılar. Bu da çalışma kampında geçecek beş yıl anlamına geliyordu. Annem karı asla affetmedi.”Ayakizi Kitaplığı unutulmuş ya da daha büyük olayların ve felaketlerin gölgesinde kalmış hikâyelere ve deneyimlere dair kitaplardan meydana geliyor. Kitaplığın kurulduğu arthereİstanbul, Ayakizi için bir merkez görevi üstleniyor. Burası Suriyeli sanatçılara destek olmak, onlara görünürlük ve bir çalışma mekânı sağlamak üzere İstanbul’da yaşayan Suriyeli sanatçılar tarafından kuruldu.Ayakizi en eski iletişim yollarından biriyle, sesle alan açmayı deniyor. Konuşmalar, sohbetler, kayıtlar, bir arada ve yüksek sesle okuma bu sürecin önemli bir parçası. Ayakizi bir kitaplığın yanı sıra konuşmalar, buluşmalar, bir podcast serisi ve konserler aracılığıyla sanat ya da edebiyat yoluyla savaş üzerine düşünmek için bir nesne, metin, ân, alan, şarkı ya da yerleştirmeden yola çıkmayı amaçlıyor.

Telephone Call from arthereIstanbul! dials the first numberThe Footsteps Library, established for the Istanbul Biennial in arthereIstanbul, is ready for the first meeting. This library consists of approximately 600 Turkish and Arabic books that tell stories from the margins of wars, from Homer's Iliad to the present. Established by Syrian artists, arthereIstanbul will be the hub for a series of meetings prior to and during the 17th Istanbul Biennial between 17 September and 20 November. The topic will be approached in many ways with sound, visuals, music, photos, installation, book readings and phone calls. At each meeting, excerpts from the Footsteps books will be read aloud. Telephone Call from arthereIstanbul! will lend an ear and give the time of the day to the artists who have passed by this place and left their mark there, from wherever they are in the world at the moment. The guest of the first meeting is the author of the book Jamhara/Assemblage. Dark Nights onto Rolling Waves, Odai Al Zoubi. This joint work by illustrator, sculptor Mohamad Omran and writer Al Zoubi, with texts and drawings, describes nine moments from the history of Syria since 1980, where gunfire and conflict have never left. A funeral, a scolding from the teachers, a bus carrying the released prisoners, a yellow comb, a deep silence bring the spectators come within a whisker of a war that seems endless. We will talk on the phone with Al Zoubi about the book, the time he spent in Istanbul and what he is up to these days. What is Footsteps?Footsteps is a learning process, an attempt to collect stories from the margins of wars. Stories that are urgent but for which the pathways for the conversations that lead to these stories are uncertain and difficult. Sometimes a few words, a short story, a memory or a dream could describe the experience of living with war in an explicit way. Like a woman’s brief memory from the day she fled the war in Syria: “Although the climate in the neighbouring country Turkey is just the same, I packed summer clothes in the bag during winter when we decided to leave the next morning.” Or in Herta Müller’s mother’s story from a village in Romania in 1945: “Many people hid. My mother spent four days in the ground. Then the snow came. They couldn’t bring her food in secret anymore, every step between house, barn and hole in the ground became visible. Throughout the village the way to every hiding place could be seen in all that snow. Footsteps could be read in the garden. People were denounced by the snow. Not just my mother, many people had to abandon their hiding places voluntarily, forced out voluntarily by the snow. And that meant five years in the work camp. My mother never forgave the snow.”Footsteps Library consists of a collection of books that deal with the stories and experiences of war that are often forgotten or left in the shadow of larger events and traumas. arthereIstanbul is the central hub for the Footsteps project. It is an arts space founded by Syrian artists living in Istanbul to provide Syrian artists with support, visibility and a place to work.Footsteps intends to open up a space for thinking together with the oldest method of communication that is the voice. Talks, conversations, recordings, reading aloud and together constitute an important part of the process. Besides a library Footsteps will try to explore an object, a text, a moment, a song, a space, an installation as forms of artistic, literary impression through talks, meetings, a podcast series and concerts to reflect on war.Footsteps has set out with arthereIstanbul at the invitation of the 17th Istanbul Biennial.
