WEN-HSI Harman was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and is a ceramic artist currently living and working in Somerset, United Kingdom. She is also a member of the UNESCO International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) and the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS).
Her BA in Chinese Literature at Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan (2006). She then completed her first MA in the History of Chinese Art at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan (2008). Following this, she pursued a second MA in Contemporary Crafts (Ceramics) at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK (2010). In 2018, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Ceramics from Bath Spa University, UK.
Her ceramic practice explores cross-cultural identity through the medium of clay, particularly porcelain. She investigates the concept of 'in-betweenness'—the space between life and death, the West and the East, order and disorder, and pink and blue. Her handmade ceramic wall pieces primarily incorporate porcelain and stoneware, enhanced with gold luster, enamels, and digital transfers. Living away from her homeland has given her a 'clearer' perspective on the culture in which she grew up. These experiences have provided a platform for her to address and examine cross-cultural questions.
